Allergy Friendly Desserts

I think most people can agree that dessert is delicious. But dessert with allergies can be really hard. They tend to be complex, and nuts and other allergens are frequently sprinkled on top of cakes, ice cream, and all kinds of sweet foods. I know I’ve gotten used to it over the years, but I pity whoever had to explain to six-year-old me that I couldn’t have a slice of my best friend’s birthday cake. Over the years, I’ve found some desserts that make up for not being able to eat cake at birthday parties, and I’d like to share them with you all so that you can hopefully enjoy them too!

I first want to talk about Leah’s Better Bites. Not only are they gluten free and vegan, but all of their products are free from the top 8 allergens as well as sesame. They make cake, cupcakes, and cake bites, but my favorite are the dough bites (specifically the cookie dough ones). They have a pretty wide variety of flavors, but who doesn’t love cookie dough covered in chocolate? The portions are well sized, so you can just eat one or a few! I haven’t tried the cakes, but the cupcakes are quite good as well. You can buy them right off the website, but they also sell them in many grocery stores (Target, Whole Foods, Kroger, etc.).

Another option that I like that's definitely on the healthier side of desserts is Yasso. There’s very few ice cream/frozen yogurt bars that I’ve found I’m able to eat, but this is one of them! They are not an allergen dedicated free facility, but as someone with severe sesame and nut allergies I am able to eat a few of their products. The bars I’ve eaten include chocolate-chip cookie dough, black raspberry chip, cookies ‘n cream, mint chocolate chip, and sea-salt caramel. They’re greek yogurt bars that taste like ice cream, so if you’re looking for a healthier option that’s still sweet, this one has more protein and less calories than your average ice cream bar. Most of their products are gluten-free, but please check each individual product for allergen information. They’re sold at many popular stores as well!

Lastly, my number one recommended allergy dessert (as well as snack food brand!) this one is best for if you’re baking at home, but they have all sorts of options! With Enjoy Life Foods, all their products are gluten-free, and don’t contain 14 common allergens, including the top 8 as well as Canada’s twelve priority allergens. They have cookies, snack bars, and snacks, but my personal favorite is their chocolate. I love both baking with and eating chocolate, but it’s hard since so many chocolate brands cross-contaminate with nuts. Their chocolate tastes just as good, and it’s much safer! They have both chocolate bars and chocolate chips, which is fantastic! I also really enjoy their dark raspberry protein bites, they’re quite good in general, but also great when I’m fencing or just need a bit more energy throughout the day. Overall they’re definitely my favorite food allergy brand and I would highly recommend them.

I hope this gave you a few ideas of some more allergy desserts you can enjoy. I know finding new brands has been super beneficial and fun for me so I hope it is for you as well!
